Israel has one of the worst human rights abuse records. According to Israeli historians Morris and Pape, during the creation of the State of Israel in 1948, up to 750,000 Palestinians were forced to flee Palestine. These refugees are now the world's largest refugee population. Thousands of Palestinian men, women and children were massacred and hundreds of villages were demolished. Since then, tens of thousands of Palestinians have been killed in what has been called by many prominent Israelis: the ethnic cleansing of Palestine.
During Lebanon's civil war, Israel invaded and participated in the massacre of up to 3000 unarmed women, children and men in the Palestinian refugee camps of Beirut in 1982. During the uprising of Palestinians against Israeli Apartheid (Military Occupation), tens of thousands of children caught throwing stones at Israeli tanks had their fingers, arms or elbows broken. In 2001, a UN conference - building on a 1975 resolution - charged that Zionism (the ideology that only Jews have a right to Palestine, not the indigenous peoples) is a racist ideology. The recent massacres against civilians in Lebanon (2006) and Gaza (2008-9) - where chemical weapons and UXOs were used against civilian populations killing thousands of innocent women, children and men - had drawn incredible outrage from the international community and human rights groups. During the Gaza conflict, the Israeli Agricultural Ministry issued a notice that it would provide free medical aid to Israeli street dogs and pets, at the same time the Israeli Military destryed hundreds of thousands of pounds of medical and food supplied and prevented medical crews from attending to injured Palestinians in Gaza.
That said, in recent years, Israel has shown itself to provide humanitarian assistance to numerous disaster crises:
Jan 2005 tsunami: Israel is one of the first nations to offer assistance to the sea-ravaged region: -hundreds of thousands of dollars of aid to countries affected -sent medical relief team, medicine and tonns of much needed food, water, blankets, tents generators, equipment, etc. -Indonesia (a country with no diplomatic ties with Israel) received 75 tons of Israeli aid, providing meals for 4,000 people a day as well as medical gear.
Jan. - Feb. 2001 Earthquake in El Salvador: - Israel sends medical relief team - medical supplies and equipment - provides 22 tons of clothing and blankets
Jan. 2001 Earthquake in India: - Israel sends team of medical personnel and medical equipment - Israeli medics treat victims, deliver babies and assist in search-and-rescure efforts
April 2000 Ethiopia: - Israel provides 30 tons of emergency medical aid (food, water medicine, blankets, supplies) to starving Ethiopians
Aug. 1999 Earthquake in Turkey: - Israel sends search-and-rescue team, dogs, equipment to assist victims - Israel sets up hospital to treat adults and children; with intensive care unit, operating room, delivery room and laboratories
April 1999 Kosovo crisis: - Israel sends medics and medical aid to Kosovo refugees - Israel establishes medical field hospital to aid Albanian refugees fleeing their homes
Nov. 1998 Hurricane Mitch disaster: - Israel provides aid (medical aid teams, equipment and supplies) to Central American countries following the natural disaster, including Honduras, Nicaragua, El Salvador and Guatemala
Thus - Israel has shown to provide medical and emergency assistance to certain nations, but has also engaged in a 60-year genocide of Palestinian people within its own borders.
